Containerboard Price Increase – What does that mean to you?
Increase announcements were made in April for the price of 42 lb. Kraft liner board. This is the “bell weather” grade of paper used in the process of making corrugated paper board. A sheet of 200 Mullen Test Corrugated Paper Board by law, must be comprised of two 42 lb. liners (the combined weight of the facings must be 84 pounds). Industry publications “PPI Pulp & Paper Week” and “Board Converting News” have both reflected a $50/ton increase. How this increase will affect the price of a box will depend on the amount of corrugated board with relation to the run and set up times involved in producing the box. For example a small box run in small quantity will see a small effect on its price as opposed to a large box run in truck load quantities. As we have in the past with paper price changes (up or down), we will look at the effect of the material cost change on each box to accurately assess the effect of the material cost change.

QRM –Quick Response Manufacturing
Nelson Container has been utilizing QRM (Quick Response Manufacturing) for 4 years. As part of our continuous improvement, we will once again have QRM Training in July for all employees at Nelson Container. QRM is a companywide strategy to reduce lead times in all phases of manufacturing and office operations. It helps us bring our products to you quickly by reducing non-value added time, which QRM refers to as “white space”. This training will provide another opportunity for our employees to learn about the principles of QRM and to use those skills through various hands on exercises provided during the training.

5S
Our 5S team is just finishing up their most recent project to organize the workspace by our flexo folder gluer. 5S one of the Lean manufacturing tools that is a part of our philosophy and our culture. We believe that organization brings productivity. This project brought more organization to the print plates in this area that will help improve our set-up time because operators will spend less time locating the print plates that they need.

LEED Measures at NCC
Nelson Container values operating in an environmentally safe way. One of our long-term goals is to become LEED certified. We are currently working on the items within the Water Efficiency section of LEED. Right now we have implemented steps to improve our water consumption in the plant through monitoring usage and improving our techniques for changing ink colors at the press. Participation in the voluntary LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) process demonstrates leadership, innovation, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. LEED-certification helps us to:
•	Lower operating costs and increase asset value
•	Reduce waste
•	Conserve energy and water
•	Be healthier and safer for our employees
•	Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions

Sincerely,

Tom Nelson
